Botanical Oil Safety FAQ

At Wildroot Alchemy, thoughtful formulation and transparency are part of our practice. Below are answers to some of the most common questions about using our botanical oils safely.

This information is provided for general educational purposes only and is not intended to replace medical advice. If you have questions related to a health condition, pregnancy, medications, allergies, or use on children, please consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Topical Use

Are your body oils intended for topical use?

Yes. Our botanical body oils are formulated for external use on the skin as moisturizing body oils, massage oils, and part of your everyday self-care ritual.

They are not intended for ingestion or internal use.

How diluted are your body oils?

Our body oils are professionally formulated with essential oils generally ranging from approximately 1.5–3% dilution, depending on the individual blend.

Essential oils are highly concentrated botanical extracts, so we intentionally formulate within conservative topical ranges to balance aromatic experience with skin safety.

Our body oils arrive pre-diluted and ready to use. No additional dilution is necessary.

Should I dilute my body oil before applying it?

No. Our body oils have already been blended with carrier oils at an appropriate topical dilution.

If you have particularly sensitive or reactive skin, feel free to reach out to us about which blends have the lowest dilution. All of our body oils are formulated with sensitive skin in mind, but everyone's skin is different, so if you have severely sensitive skin, we recommend patch testing first.

Undiluted essential oils or essential oil concentrates should not be applied directly to the skin unless specifically formulated and labeled for that purpose.

Can I put the body oils in an essential oil diffuser?

We do not recommend using our body oils in a diffuser.

Our body oils contain carrier oils and other skin-conditioning ingredients and are specifically formulated for topical use. Traditional essential oil diffusers are designed for pure essential oils rather than carrier-oil-based products.

Using a body oil in a diffuser may also damage or clog the diffuser.

Can I use the body oils in the bath?

Our body oils may be used as part of a bath ritual, but please use caution.

Oil can make the bathtub, shower floor, and surrounding surfaces very slippery. Use only a small amount and take extra care when entering or exiting the tub.

Because essential oils do not naturally disperse evenly through water, those with particularly sensitive skin may prefer applying the body oil to damp skin after bathing rather than adding it directly to bath water.

Can I use your room and linen sprays on my skin?

While our room and linen sprays can come into contact with skin, they are formulated primarily for use on clothing, linens, and in the air rather than as body sprays.

Because they contain alcohol, they may be drying to the skin and may be more irritating for those with sensitive or reactive skin. We recommend spraying them onto clothing or linens instead of directly onto the body whenever possible.

If you do choose to use them on skin, avoid the face, eyes, mucous membranes, and irritated or broken skin.

Patch Testing

Why should I patch test a new product?

Botanical ingredients can still cause sensitivities or allergic reactions. Everyone's skin is different, and a patch test allows you to see how your skin responds before applying a new product more broadly.

We especially recommend patch testing if you have sensitive skin, known allergies, or a history of reactions to botanical or fragranced products.

How do I perform a patch test?

  1. Apply a small amount of the product to a small area of clean skin, such as the inner forearm.

  2. Leave the area undisturbed and observe it for approximately 24 hours.

  3. If you experience redness, itching, burning, swelling, or irritation, wash the area and discontinue use.

  4. If no reaction occurs, you may begin using the product as directed.

A successful patch test cannot guarantee that a reaction will never occur, but it can help identify potential sensitivities before broader use.

Pregnancy & Nursing

Can I use your products while pregnant or breastfeeding?

As a certified aromatherapist, I formulate our products with essential oils that, unless specifically noted otherwise, are considered appropriate for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used as intended and at the dilutions provided.

That said, pregnancy and breastfeeding can involve individual health considerations, sensitivities, medications, and provider-specific guidance. Out of an abundance of caution, we always recommend consulting your OB-GYN, midwife, or other qualified healthcare provider before introducing any new essential oil or botanical product during pregnancy or while nursing.

If a product has additional pregnancy or breastfeeding precautions, those will be noted on the individual product page or label.

Children

Can children use your products?

Please follow the age recommendations listed on each individual product.

Products formulated specifically for children will be clearly identified as such. Products without a child-specific age recommendation should be considered intended for adult use.

Children can have different sensitivities and require different essential oil dilution considerations than adults. If you are unsure whether a particular botanical product is appropriate for your child, consult a qualified pediatric healthcare professional before use.

Always keep oils and other botanical products out of reach of young children.

In case of accidental ingestion in the United States, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Storage

How should I store my botanical oils?

To help maintain freshness and ingredient integrity:

  • Store oils in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Keep caps and pumps securely closed when not in use.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture, steam, or significant temperature fluctuations.

  • Do not leave oils in hot vehicles or other high-temperature environments.

Shelf life can vary based on the botanical and carrier oils used in each formula. Refer to the individual product packaging or product page for specific information.

Can I refrigerate my oils?

Refrigeration is generally not necessary.

A cool, temperature-stable environment away from direct sunlight is usually sufficient. Some natural carrier oils may become cloudy or thicken when chilled; this does not necessarily indicate that the product has spoiled.

If an oil has been refrigerated, allow it to return to room temperature before use.

Sensitivities & Reactions

What should I do if I experience a reaction?

If you experience redness, itching, burning, swelling, or other irritation after using a product, discontinue use and gently wash the affected area.

If the reaction is severe, continues to worsen, involves significant swelling or difficulty breathing, or does not resolve, seek appropriate medical attention.

I have a known allergy. How can I check your ingredients?

Complete ingredient information is provided on each product page and product label.

If you have a known allergy or sensitivity to essential oils, botanicals, fragrances, carrier oils, seeds, nuts, or other plant-derived ingredients, carefully review the ingredient list before use.

If you have questions about a specific ingredient or product, please contact us before purchasing. We're always happy to help you understand the formulation and identify products that may be more appropriate for your needs. For medical conditions, allergies, medications, or other individual health concerns, your healthcare provider should always be part of that decision.

When to Consult a Healthcare Professional

Our products are formulated at appropriate dilutions for their intended use, and we are always happy to answer questions about ingredients, essential oil dilutions, age recommendations, and individual product formulations before you purchase.

Because everyone's health history is different, we recommend checking with a qualified healthcare professional when there are additional factors that could affect how your body responds to a botanical or essential oil product, including if you:

  • Have previously experienced a significant or unexplained reaction to essential oils, botanicals, or skincare products

  • Have known allergies or a history of severe allergic reactions

  • Are currently taking medications or undergoing medical treatment that may affect your skin, sensitivity, or interact with botanical ingredients

  • Are experiencing ongoing, unexplained, or worsening skin symptoms

  • Have an active medical condition or other health circumstance for which your healthcare provider has given you specific ingredient restrictions

  • Are unsure whether a product is appropriate alongside your current treatment or healthcare plan

If you're simply unsure which Wildroot Alchemy product is the best fit, you're always welcome to reach out before purchasing. As a certified aromatherapist, I can provide information about our formulations, dilution levels, ingredients, and intended use. For questions that require individualized medical guidance, we may recommend speaking with your healthcare provider.
